Russian word for Christmas

Christmas is Рождество (Rozhdestvo) in Russian. If we pay attention to the etymology of the word Рождество (Христово), we will find out that it comes from the word-combination “the birth of Christ”. In Russia the New Year is celebrated in a bigger way than Christmas. Christmas is celebrated on January 7th in Russia. A believer keeps the Nativity fast. On Christmas night holiday services are conducted in all churches.

Christmas is a family holiday. House-to-house carol-singing is an ancient tradition which passed down through the ages. You are not supposed to have dinner till the rising of the first star.
