Meaning of Privet in Russian

The word “Privet!” (“Привет!”) which is a noun comes from the verb “Privetstvovat’” (“Приветствовать”). The last one means “to greet”. “Privet!” is a friendly greeting between people who are the same age. You can use it in informal situations. You can say “Privet!” to greet your friend or acquaintance.

The prefix “pri-” means that you are approaching to somebody. And you can see the root “vet” in the words “otvet” (“answer”) and “vest’” (“a piece of news”). So when you are greeting a person by saying “Privet!”, you present news to him.
